I bought a used motorola sb5101u on ebay today for ~$18 shipped. The fee is apparently going up from $4 to $6, so if my modem lasts 3-4 months it'll pay for itself. I have the 10mbit plan - higher tiers will probably require a more expensive DOCSIS 3 modem in order to get the speeds you're paying for.
